Congratulations on your new baby! We are delighted to share in this experience with you. Parents, especially new ones, often have a lot of questions. This brief guide will answer the most common questions parents ask. It covers what to expect and how to care for your baby from delivery to the first few weeks at home. More information on preparing for your baby, and ongoing care after the first few weeks, is available in our Prenatal Guide. More detailed information on many of these newborn topics is available here on our website. We also have a Breastfeeding Guide that is available.
Having a baby can be a stressful experience, but be sure to take time to enjoy and to love your baby. Take time to cuddle, and don’t be afraid to handle your baby. Talk to your baby, hold your baby close, and get to know your baby.
Your baby is a new member of your family. While it will change your family routine somewhat, remember that your baby is an addition to your family, not the center of your family. Your baby can adapt to fit into your family’s routines, and your family routines can adapt to your new baby as well.
You will get a lot of advice from people; take it all with a grain of salt, and be sure it fits with what we currently know based on science and research. Every child is unique and every family different. Be sure to ask us about any advice that you are not sure about.
Do not expect your baby to act just like the last baby you had or your friend’s or family member’s baby. Take time to get to know and to enjoy your baby’s unique personality.
Children are a blessing from the Lord (Psalm 127:3); we are excited to be a part of your family’s journey.
