Merck announced at a meeting last week that it will no longer manufacture separate measles, mumps, and rubella vaccines. These vaccines became unavailable over the past few years, but it was unclear if they would resume production at some point. Merck will only manufacture the MMR-II vaccine, which is the only vaccine available in the United States for measles, mumps, or rubella. This appears to be a permanent decision from Merck. While we believe that there is no benefit to separating the vaccines, we have purchased them in the past for patients who would only vaccinate their children against these diseases if the separate vaccines were available. The only option now is the MMR vaccine.
