The Georgia Department of Public Health has confirmed a case of measles in Atlanta in an unvaccinated person. They are currently tracking down people who were exposed. Measles is highly contagious, and there is almost always more than one case. There is currently an outbreak in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
In order to protect infants too young to receive a measles vaccine, as well as older children who medically cannot receive the vaccine, we have special precautions in our office whenever there is measles in the area. All patients with symptoms of measles and all children > 12 months old who are not vaccinated for measles will wait in the car to enter through the back entrance. Since children with flu and covid symptoms already wait in the car, this mainly affects unvaccinated patients.
