We are delighted to announce that we now have advanced instrument-based vision screening (photoscreening) at CCP!
Vision screening is one of the most important things pediatricians do for the health of children. The vision center of a child’s brain is developing until about age 10; eye problems, if untreated, can cause the brain to develop improperly, leading to permanent vision loss. Children are not little adults, and treating vision problems early can save a child’s sight.
Traditional vision screening starts at 3-4 years of age, when a child can talk and recognize shapes or letters. Before that, the eyes are checked at every well visit for any obvious problems. However, we now have the technology to check the eyes of younger patients, even infants and toddlers. Research has shown screening at these ages to be beneficial and effective.
Photoscreening is now recommended by:
- The American Academy of Pediatrics
- The American Academy of Ophthalmology
- The American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus
It is recommended annually starting at 6-12 months of age and continuing until the child is able to read traditional eye charts.
We are excited to offer this advanced technology to our patients.
