Congratulations… you’ve made it to two! It has probably been a quick two years, and now you have this walking, talking, running bundle of energy on your hands. Though your child will probably not like being here today, this visit is an important one for keeping your child healthy. These first few years are among the most important and critical in your child’s life.

What to expect today

  • We will ask about what your child’s diet, and be sure he is getting the proper nutrition at this age.
  • We will examine your child’s growth, making sure she is growing at a normal rate for her age. This is a very important part of making sure children are healthy and are getting the proper nutrition.
  • We will check on how he is sleeping because this is important for her health (and for the whole family!).
  • We will ask what kind of things she is doing now to be sure her brain, nerves and muscles are developing properly.
  • We will do a full physical exam, looking at every part of your child’s body. Please let the doctor know if you have any particular questions or concerns.

Vaccines given today

  • Most children have completed their primary immunization series by this age, but many two year olds still need one or two vaccines. Vaccines will be given if necessary.
  • The influenza (flu) vaccine is recommended during flu season for all children older than 6 months old. Two doses are needed if your child has not received 2 doses since birth. The vaccine is usually given between September and April each year.

Developmental Screening

We will do a formal developmental evaluation of your child today. Although we check your child’s development at every visit, there are certain ages where we do a more thorough evaluation. This will consist of a questionnaire you will fill out and we will evaluate and score. If your child has any signs of delays in development, we will ask further questions and may refer your child for further evaluation if necessary.

Development

Your child should be doing the following things now:

  • Walks well
  • Says at least 15 words
  • Starts using 2 word sentences
  • Imitates actions
  • Knows functions of simple objects (phone, spoon)

Lead Screening

If your child has a Medicaid or PeachCare plan, then we are required by Federal law to test your child for lead poisoning. All patients will receive some information on lead poisoning.

Information you should receive today

  • Caring for Your Two Year Old.
  • Two to Four Year Old Safety Sheet.
  • Lead poisoning sheet.

Next visit

  • Your child’s next recommended checkup is at age 2 ½ years (30 months) old.
